This bike was acquired on Dec 20th 2016.   Here is a photo of it waiting at a bike dealership in Vancouver, at the beginning of the crating process.  We were told it is was pretty sweet bike that was recently gone over and has no issues.

Plugging the VIN in the decoder shows that it came off the assembly line in May of 1972.  It is a triple-matching bike (for those not in the “know”, that means that the serial number on the motor matches the serial number on the frame and also matches the serial number on the headstock faceplate.  It is a SWB (Short Wheel Base) variant of the toaster.

After doing a number of short test rides and a few longer ones, it was clear that all was well with this bike.  No hidden surprises and quite a nice clean example of the toaster.  The low “euro” bars were eventually replaced with a stock set of handlebars as the riding position was a bit too aggressive in our opinion for such a classic.

Main seal was replaced as it was leaking, but other than that nothing other than routine maintenance and fluid changes were done to it.

On purchase it was showing 64 304 original miles on the odometer, It is now up to 65 743 miles 6 years later.  Mainly a dozen or so shorter rides per year to keep the seals fresh.  The paint is very good  We suspect it is a repaint as it is too good to be 50 years old, however we have no details about if / when this was done.  All electrics work as they should and the bikes rides well with no issues.  The rear shocks were replaced with aftermarket units prior to our ownership and the silencers are stainless steel, again aftermarket, but the sound is very similar to stock, not obnoxious.

Below is a cold start video of the bike. Motor oil, filter, gearbox oil and final drive oils have been refreshed at 65 539 miles (200 miles ago) last Summer. The battery is of unknown vintage. We have not replaced it since purchasing the bike in 2016 and would recommend a new battery prior to any long multi-day trips.
