This is the final section of the preparation of the bike in anticipation of its first start. We will re-assemble it and set the initial carb settings. I say initial because to properly set the carb, the motor needs to be warmed up to proper operating temperatures. First step here is to disconnect the battery, as we will be replacing the alternator cover. We don’t want to let out some “magic smoke” now, do we ?

Once the alternator cover is back on, time to get the clamshell back on, and putting the new gas line in place.

Next is a new air filter

followed by new plugs…

then initial adjustment of the mixture screws. For the R90S, the initial setting is between half a turn and a full turn from fully seated.

The idle speed screw is then turned in about a full turn from the moment it makes contact with the slide.

Then it’s time to re-install the gas tank, and connect the fuel lines. One last fluid to insert, and time to see if all the fixes are gas-tight…

Then I guess there is nothing left to do but to see if all this work paid off !
There you have it ! This just goes to show that with this methodical system, even a bike that’s in a fairly poor state can be made to run. From here it’s a matter of running it until the motor is warmed up properly (a 15-20 minute ride) then adjust the carburetor properly. Then ride it around and see what else the bike might need !
Addendum, today (Oct 14th) I ran it up and down the road a little bit to warm up the motor to be able to adjust the carburetors properly, now it idles nicely
However I did notice that the front brake on the left side is sticking. Some further prodding showed that the brake line on the left side is actually clogged up with crud. Ordered some SS lines and a MC rebuild kit and some more odds and ends. Hopefully will have a solid runner by next week sometime !
